Insights from Dr. Kim: What’s Your Goliath? | Part 1

There are so many great stories in the Old Testament. David is probably my all-time Old Testament favorite. He loved God a lot and he sinned big time. God loved David a lot too. I used to wonder where I would fit on the list of who God loves the most. It took me a long time to accept and embrace the fact that I am at the very top of His list. I am His favorite - and so are you! That is always hard to get my mind around.

A few years ago my grandson, Tommy, asked me which of my five grandkids was my favorite. With no hesitation, I said, “You are!” He grinned big time. Another time my youngest granddaughter, Gracie, asked me the same question and I gave the same answer: “You are!”  Same big grin. I would tell each of them the same thing, not to just make them feel good but because it is true. Each one is my favorite. I cannot distinguish between them. I never knew that I could love all five of them equally until each was born and I realized I had enough love for each of them. I think that helped me understand that we are all God’s “favorite” and all loved just the same.

Let’s get back to David. In the book of First Samuel, seventeenth chapter, the story of David and Goliath unfolds. David’s father, Jesse, sends him to deliver provisions to his brothers who were fighting the Philistines. As David reached the camp and greeted his brothers, this huge man emerged from the Philistine camp, issuing his daily challenge to God’s people. “Find a man to kill me and we will be your servants. But if I kill him, you will be our servants.” A bold challenge and so far, no takers. No one was willing to stand up to Goliath. No one was willing to fight this giant even though they knew he stood between them and God’s purpose for Israel.

What stands between you and God’s purpose for you? What is your Goliath? What seems so big that instead of fighting you sit and wait even knowing that God has so much more for you.  Maybe on the other side of your Goliath is the marriage you have always dreamed of or a life free from the baggage you have carried for a long time. This week I challenge you to spend some time with God and with His help define your Goliath. Next week, we will look at how David defeated his Goliath and how you can defeat yours.
