I often say that Nancy is my best friend. She says the same. Being best friends its pros and cons. On the pro side, valuing and not wanting to lose that “best friendship” has given us reason to stick it out during rough times. The con side is that it seems the better the friendship the more opportunities for conflict to arise.

Over time, we’ve had to learn to manage those times of conflict in such a way that we do not damage our friendship. Is it a lot of effort? Yes. Is it worth the effort? Absolutely! Nancy has been my best friend since about a year into dating her. I never want to lose that part of our relationship.

Here are the qualities I list in 14 Keys to Lasting Love that Nancy and I value in our friendship in marriage.

  • Always be honest with each other, even when it might mean hurt feelings.

  • Trust each other and be trustworthy always.

  • Be loyal to each other and never let anyone or anything take that away.

  • Listen well.

  • Support each other.

  • Encourage each other.

  • Laugh together.

  • Empathize with each other.

  • Pray for each other.

  • Accept each other’s differences.

Why not together make your own list for your friendship in your marriage? Then pray for God to help the two of you weave those into the fabric of your marriage!
