Insights from Dr. Kim: Weeds

At some point, most of us have heard that we should not let “weeds” grow up in our lives. The idea is something like this: “Weeds” are the bad things in our lives that choke out the good things. The “weeds” are evil. The “weeds” pull us down. There is no place for “weeds” in the life of a Christian. Recently, I drove by our old neighborhood and stopped my car in front of a house I have always liked. I could not believe what I was seeing. This home used to have a beautiful lawn. It was an amazing lawn, groomed and manicured to perfection. But today, I struggled to see any grass because all I saw were weeds. I could not believe it. How did this happen? How did this lawn go from one extreme to another over one summer?

This is the second year that Nancy and I are in our new home. Our yard is smaller than our previous lawns and I set a goal this summer for it to be weed free. I did all the right things -- spraying, fertilizing and watering and our lawn does look amazing. In fact, the lawn I referenced from our old neighborhood was one of my models for a great lawn. With all the work I put in to make our lawn perfect, I find myself pulling a few weeds every week. No matter how hard I work, there are still some weeds.

This is what the weeds have taught me. There are always “weed seeds” in every lawn. My neighbor in my old neighborhood fought off the weeds every year. For some reason, this year he did not fight and the weeds won. I personally fought a good battle this year but there were still seeds planted some time in the past that fought through all my hard work.

For most of my life, I have looked at the “weeds” in my life as the evils around me. I believe that my role is to stay away from the “weeds” and if they do somehow get into my life, I need to fight them off.  I still believe this is true but I now see another source of the “weeds” in my life. Sometimes there are “weeds” that grow up in my life today that I planted some time in the past. Some are from past thoughts that were lies that I believed to be true. Some are from bad choices I made. They were all steps away from God, not steps toward Him. Most of these are more difficult for me to recognize than the “evil weeds” around me, and thus are more destructive to me personally.

What about the weeds in your life? What about the ones that are there from seeds you may have planted a long time ago? Maybe you thought you pulled those weeds and did not realize they left some seeds behind. Maybe you were unaware of how destructive they could be. The answer for all the “weeds” in our lives is the same whether they are “weeds” on the outside or “weeds” on the inside. Whether they were planted a long time ago, recently, or even today, the answer is God and our relationship with Him. He forgives us and restores us. He fights with and for us. Don’t let your life look like that lawn in my old neighborhood. Let it look like the life God designed and created for you. Get rid of the “weeds.” Now, what’s your first step towards Him?
