Insights from Dr. Kim: Milestones

On January 2, 1970 at 8 p.m., Nancy and I stood at an altar in a church in Houston, Texas before an Episcopal priest, a bunch of people and God and committed the rest of our lives to each other. The picture of Nancy walking down the aisle with her Dad is as vivid in my mind today as it was then. She was beautiful that day and is even more beautiful today. That was 50 years ago today. Even as I write this it seems hard to believe. Fifty years is certainly a long time. Looking back, it has gone by in a flash!

Nancy and I were really young when we married and we had no clue how to do a marriage but we had two things going for us: We were against divorce and we wanted God to be in our marriage. Those two things got us through all the tough times. It took us a long time to figure out how to fight fair, to understand each other and to embrace our differences. We spent a lot of time over these 50 years on our knees seeking wisdom, guidance and help from God.  He has been so faithful and answered every prayer in a way that was perfect for us.

Today we celebrate a miracle. God put two broken people together and began patiently molding them into who He created them to be. It has been an amazing journey and honestly, I cannot wait to see what He does over the next 25+ years. Next to God, Nancy is the greatest blessing in my life. She is my best friend, confidant, partner, buddy, lover, and soulmate. God truly made the two of us become one.

We all have milestones in life. Milestones mark a significant event or highlight in our lives. They are those things that we celebrate and are grateful for. I believe it is important to celebrate each and every one of them. We do this with birthdays, especially those we consider significant - 16, 21, 30, 50 and so on. Graduating from high school, college or grad school are all reasons to celebrate. Are there any milestones coming up in your life or marriage in 2020 that you will want to celebrate? Whatever the milestone, take time to thank God and make Him part of your celebration.

Today I celebrate a God that loves me more than I can imagine, a marriage that is more than I could ever have imagined, and a wife that is perfect for me in every way.
